WYNWOOD NORTE, MIAMI, FLORIDA, USA
THE THREE TRADITIONS OF MIAMI
THE THREE TRADITIONS OF MIAMI speaks of the evolution of Miami’s vernacular as well as the specific uniqueness of Wynwood Norte. Originally starting with two lots with two distinct single family homes, this proposal highlights the individuality of these homes by either renovating or replicating their design styles, while maximizing the available space following the changes made in the zoning code.
Beginning with the craftsman home, or first tradition, the proposal demonstrates how the neighborhood’s original homes can be updated and reutilized following the new zoning codes. The home, completely remodeled and slightly modernized, was transformed into a duplex with two, two bedroom units. A prime example of the existing homes being given new life following the new zoning codes, rather than being razed for newer structures, the home addresses the issues brought up when focusing on the originality and the history of the neighborhood.
The second tradition, the spanish bungalow, is an example of proposed replication of designs in the neighborhood. Although this is a brand new construction, it follows the queues of what was already there, preventing a significant disturbance in the architecture of the neighborhood. The original home was exploded into a three story complex, with nine units ranging from studio to double bedroom apartments.
The back building, or third tradition, seemingly strays away from the original vernacular Wynwood Norte. However, the new complex is a nod to the modernization being brought into Wynwood Norte, and takes the shape of a more raw and muted construction consisting of 10 single bedroom units and six parking spaces as well. This allows for the ‘original’ homes to stand out, again preventing a lapse in the streetscape.
The project is dedicated to the honor of the residents of Wynwood Norte, and the almost forgotten history of the neighborhood. In addition, it serves as an example of a ‘less invasive’ approach to the neighborhood’s construction boom, allowing for developers and residents alike to harmoniously work together to maintain the neighborhood’s individuality and traditions in these ever changing times.
